The initial phase of the studio involved a thorough investigation of the architectural style of the renowned architect Luis Barragan, through a series of design exercises that delved into his distinctive attitudes and approaches. The objective was to create a comprehensive compendium of hand-drawn diagrams, showcasing Barragan's innovative methods for dealing with crucial aspects like structure, lighting, and organization. A variety of artistic mediums such as watercolors, colored pencils, pens, and graphite were employed to depict the nuances and subtleties of the spaces under scrutiny. The insights gleaned from this rigorous analytical exercise were then applied to the design project, which constituted the second half of the studio.
Books are portals to worlds within worlds. With the introduction of the printing press, they became more accessible, turning book publishing into an enterprise and creating a place for literary exploration. As technology has advanced, traditional bookshops have faced challenges with the rise of smartphones and online retailers like Amazon. However, bookshops still hold the potential to offer a unique space for reading and socializing, especially when combined with a cozy cafe serving freshly brewed coffee. The objective of this project is to design a bookstore and cafe in Udaipur, a city of lakes located between the Pichola lake and the City Palace, with the Machla Magra hills in the backdrop. The design must respond to the context of the location while incorporating the principles and attitudes of Luis Barragan.
